Biography

I am a tenured Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. I also serve as training faculty in the Center for Neuroscience and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, and as Associate Director of Rehabilitation Research at the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research. Until recently, I served for 16 years as Co-Director of the Center for Neuroscience Summer Undergraduate Research Program. My research focuses on neurobehavioral and cognitive recovery following preclinical traumatic brain injury (TBI). Specifically, I investigate the effects of pharmacological agents, environmental enrichment (a preclinical model of neurorehabilitation), and intranasally administered neural stem cells individually and in combination across different age groups and both sexes in rat models. An additional area of interest is the impact of antipsychotic drugs (APDs) on neurobehavioral and cognitive function. These drugs are frequently prescribed to TBI patients to manage agitation and aggression, aiding in safe and accurate assessment, yet their long-term effects on recovery remain inadequately understood. I am deeply committed to service within the scientific community and to the development of the next generation of researchers. I have held several leadership positions in the National Neurotrauma Society, including Treasurer/Secretary, Council Member, and President. Currently, I serve as a Council Member of the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society and as a member of the Board of Governors for the International Brain Injury Association. In addition to these roles, I have mentored more than 200 trainees at all academic levels, as well as junior faculty, both locally and nationally.
